Field Trips
by Mary O'Neil
(dress appropriately)
Field Trips are scheduled as follows:
Sunday, June 9, Lake Wynoochee
Meet at Tractor Supply Parking lot at 8:00 am. We will travel East to
Montesano where we can meet up with more birders at the Monsters Mocha coffee
stand just to the south side of the Hwy 12 on Main Street/Hwy 107. Hopefully we
can enjoy the Maidenhair Falls and the Wynoochee Falls where we might get to see
some dipper birds and who knows what all.
Tuesday, June 25, John's River State Wildlife Area
Meet at the Southside Swansons (foot of the bridge where Hwy 101 and Hwy
109 split) at 8:30 an. There is usually a nice mix of passerines (brush birds) and
water fowl and the occasional decoy. You have to join the group to be privy to the
private decoy joke.) This will be mostly walking although the trail is paved and
level.
Sunday, July 14. Rainbow Falls, Hwy 6, Chehalis
Meet at Southside Swansons at 8:00 am. We will travel south by way of
Raymond, then east via Hwy 6. One of the special birds that will be in the back of
our minds is the Hermit Warbler – a bird less seen. There could be a secondary stop
near the falls, a cemetery where the Hermit Warbler is known to hang out.
Monday, July 29, Lake Swano and points Cosmopolis
Meet at Southside Swansons at 8:30 am. There is some opportunity for 'sit'n
watch' birding although I'm anxious to check out the trails as well.
Sunday, August 11, Hoodsport
Meet at Tractor Supply Parking at 8:00am. We can meet other birders at the
Monsters Mocha just South of the Main Street exit from Hwy 12 at Montesano. We
will travel Hwy 108 to Shelton and Hwy 101 North. Hoping to visit several of the
parks that look out to Hood Canal.
Tuesday, August 27, Schaffer State Park
Meet at Tractor Supply Parking at 8:30 am. We can meet other birders at the
Monster Mocha just South of the Main Street exit from Hwy 12 at Montesano. We
can then travel Pioneer Ave in Montesano to the E. Satsop Rd and from there head
north to the park. I Know! You are probably ready to stone me for all this forest
birding, but what do you do when you live in forestland. This is a great place for a
mix of sit-down birding and trail walking.
Monday, September 9, Kalaloch, WA
Meet at the Flooring Company Parking lot on the corner of 6th
and Simpson in Hoquiam at 8:00. We will explore the burl forest at Beach 1 and 2, Search for the Tree of Life at the beach below Kalaloch . I'm hoping for some Fall Migration species, particularly the Storm Petrels, which feed in a south to north fashion in the waters just off the beach before they circle off across the Pacific to New Zealand. If
time allows, we will do a quick check up on the thousand year old drop-out. (You
have to join us to find out who.)
Just a reminder, if you would like to be included on my Birders email list, be sure to contact me so you can get the latest reminders of what's happening in the birder's world.
